The Course
In this Blender modeling course, we look at the entire process of modeling a "spider mech" based on concept art created for the course by artist Kenn Yap (Chromamoma).
We start by setting up the reference images in Blender, and from there do the first stage of modeling. This involves fast modeling tricks like booleans, and anything else that achieves the correct shape as fast as possible.
After that, the second stage consists of creating proper quad topology, based on our blockout. All of this is done without the need of paid add-ons. You will only need Blender.
What you will learn
By following the unedited step by step process of creating the spider mech, you will lean how to properly set up reference, start blocking out the shape (a step crucial for success, that people often skip!) using all kinds of fun techniques.
As the mech consists of many different shapes, each represent a small but significant milestone on your learning path.
With the blockout finished, it's much easier to create good topology. We'll finish the model with quad topology and model all the small details.
Which Blender version is this for?
The course is being developed with Blender 4.3 Beta, and 4.3 stable release (as soon as it's available in November).
How much content is there so far?
Right now, there's 86 minutes of content, in 6 lessons, with much more on the way very soon.
Your instructor
Hi, I'm Jan! I've been a Blender tutorial creator for 7 years now, creating almost 900 short (1-minute) tutorials, published on my social media channels to over 250k followers (Blender Secrets, on YouTube and Instagram).
Before this, I ran my own video and animation production company producing corporate videos, mostly making medical 2D and 3D animations and ArchViz renders, using Blender. Nowadays, I hardly do client work anymore, as I'm busy teaching Blender!
I've also produced a Hard Surface sculpting in Blender course, which has over 1000 students so far.
I care about the quality of my teaching material, and want to produce content that removes the unnecessary, unfocused parts and really teaches you what you need to know.
